NEWS | Kang-Hyuk Choi, 33, who is accused of stabbing three family members to death in Tenafly, is being held on $5 million bail, the amount the prosecution requested and one Choi’s lawyer hopes to lower. • Heavy rains and winds damaged homes and utility poles in Harrington Park Aug. 6, the hardest hit area in Bergen County. Roughly 700 to 800 homes lost power that day, with most regaining electricity at 4 p.m. • A routine traffic stop turned into a motorcycle chase and then a manhunt through backyards until police found their suspect hiding in a garage. Police from several departments had a Cresskill garage surrounded when Dean Woodfrinch, 22, of Hackensack came running out. Woodfrinch knocked down a Dumont officer before several other cops tackled and handcuffed the suspect. • Not much is left of a home at 63 Old Closter Dock Road in Closter after a fire the evening of Aug. 8 destroyed the house. The entire front of the house was engulfed in flames when the Closter Fire Department responded shortly after 5 p.m. The Bergen County Arson Squad is still investigating the cause. • A drug deal between a Cresskill resident and an Englewood man turned sour once police arrived on the scene. Marc Rainey, 21, of Englewood, was arrested July 22 on charges of distributing a controlled dangerous substance within reach of school property. John Scherer, 50, of Cresskill, was arrested on charges of crack cocaine possession. • One concerned parent in the Northern Valley Regional High School district is using his expertise in the field of toxicology to help the district fields, which have high lead content in the fibers, be a candidate for future testing. • For the ninth year, children’s librarian Latricia Markle planned Circus Day at the Tenafly Library as an event for young children, which included a few entertainers, snacks and face painting. • Sam Stathis of Demarest is using his interest in harness racing to help raise money to cure a rare disease that took the life of his best friend’s 14-year-old son. He has become involved in the Chris Vasiliou Memorial Foundation to raise funds and awareness about vasculitis, a rare disease that causes inflammation of blood vessels. • Gaby Ponce, a junior at Tenafly High School who has been skateboarding since she was eight, recently competed in the X Games in Carson, Calif. She ranked fifth from a group of eight females competing in the vert competition, which involves doing tricks on a 15-foot U-shaped ramp. • The bridge that would span the Tenakill brook in Closter should be completed by the Aug. 15 deadline. There had been concern in past weeks that the project would be delayed due to the contractors not completing certain phases according to the expected timeframe. But an Aug. 4 meeting with the bridge contractor alleviated those fears. • Members of the Englewood Fire Department showed campers at the Englewood Summer Youth Camp how they rescue individuals trapped in vehicles. The demonstration included a Mazda 626, which firefighters cut open with the “Jaws of Life” to rescue volunteer “victims.” • Women’s Rights Information Center in Englewood is celebrating Women’s Equality Day, the anniversary of Constitutional Amendment XIX, which gave women the right to vote, Aug. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m.

A sever thunderstorm blew through the Northern Valley region this evening starting at about 5:15. The weather service issued a tornado warning, which has since been lifted.
